Power BI Advanced Course

Who should attend

People who are familiar and comfortable with the essentials of Power BI (building visualisations, shaping data in the query editor, using the model view for example to create hierarchies) and who want to get to grips with writing DAX measures well.

Course Length

Either 1 day (short course) or preferably 2 days (full course)

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to write DAX to solve data modelling and calculation challenges in Power BI, and to build a standard star schema data model.

Pre-requisites

Good familiarity with Power BI, for example by having attended both the foundation and intermediate courses.

Course Content

This is an advanced course with a code-first approach. Attendees write DAX in the DAX query view for much of the course. The course covers the following topics.

DAX

Write and test DAX measures in the DAX Query View.

DAX concepts

• Implicit and Explicit measures
• Aggregator Functions e.g. SUM() vs Iterator functions e.g. SUMX
• Context and Filtering. Row context in calculated columns. Implicit Filter Context in Measures. Context transition
• The CALCULATE and CALCULATETABLE functions and why they are so important

DAX syntax

• DEFINE and EVALUATE
• The SUMMARIZECOLUMNS function to return a query
• Variables. The VAR RETURN Syntax. Using several variables. Typical use cases and several examples.

Data Modelling with Power BI

• Fact and dimension tables
• Star schemas (and their advantages)
